Safely dispose of latex or water-based paint and stains

Paint can be toxic and dangerous to the environment if not disposed of properly. Oil-based paint should be dropped off at one of our convenient disposal locations.  Latex and water-based paint and stains can go in the trash can if they're dried out. Follow these steps for safe disposal.

  1. Add equal parts cat litter to latex or water-based paint in the can. If you have more than a half a can, you can pour the paint into a lined box. Then pour in cat litter.
  2. Stir the cat litter into the paint until it thickens and will not spill. Allow the mixture to sit for one hour.
  3. Throw the dried paint in the can in the garbage. Make sure to remove the lid.

If you don’t have much paint left in the can, you can remove the lid and let the paint dry out. Make sure that it’s out of reach from small children and pets.

If you don’t want to dry it out, unwanted latex paint, water-based stains, and clear finishes can be recycled at any Take it Back Network paint recycling location. A recycling fee will be charged for this service.
